Saint Petersburg - Moscow (Russia)

(1,142 / 704 km)

Euroroute R1 to Moscow

The route leads from St. Petersburg's city center through the administrative districts of Leningrad, Novgorod, Tver and Moscow and ends at the Red Square (Kremlin).
The total length is 1,142 kilometers or 704 kilometers, using the recommended rail lines and the service of ServicePoints Demyansk and Staritsa.
Such historical, cultural and religiously important cities as Veliky Novgorod, Staraya Russa, Trorzhok and Staritsa are on the way, provide variety and are in addition to Saint Petersburg and Moscow, the highlights of the natural, sometimes also little varied intermediate sections.
The path uses mainly local roads with little traffic. At times, he leads along slightly busy highways and 37 kilometers on the edge of the route Moscow-St Petersburg. There are alternatives for this and for the two passages on the gravel roads.
The path is not signposted.

Who is this tour suitable for?
The tour is (at least with the proposed alternatives) mobile without a tent and the distance of the overnight accommodation with a maximum of 73 kilometers quite bearable for many "pleasure cyclists" older age.
If you have been traveling between Riga and Saint Petersburg on the European cycle route R1, you will find a comparable infrastructure here, only the pavement of the roads is a bit decrepit.
Cyclists who expect similar standards of road condition or infrastructure, such as on the European Bicycle Route R1 in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the Münsterland, and who do not like to live without coffee and cereal sandwiches every morning, are not recommended for this tour.

The extension of the R1 to Moscow
has been our wish for over ten years.
Unfounded warnings about the lack of infrastructure, dangerous roads and very long gravel roads have prevented us from doing so.
Two long-distance cyclists, from Germany and Russia, weakened the doubts, took up the idea again and together with Vladislav Vasiliev of the bicycle club VeloPiter, Saint-Petersburg, and Vladimir Filippov of the Russian Cycle Touring Club, Moscow, developed the extension of the Euroroute R1 to Moscow.
